CPA Practical Experience Requirements (CPA PER)
In order to earn the CPA designation, candidates must complete the Practical Experience Requirements (PER) in addition to the education requirements. There are two routes for gaining Practical experience:
- Pre-Approved Program Route: Experience is gained in a pre-approved training program.
- Experience Verification Route: Experience is gained at an employer of choice.
Candidates in both routes require a minimum of 30 months of practical experience. Candidates must also develop both technical and enabling competencies as per the CPA Competency Map. Experience is reported through the Practical Experience Reporting Tool (PERT). At least twice a year, candidates are required to submit experience reports and document a completed meeting with a CPA Mentor to record their progress.
Only individuals that are enrolled in the PEP (Candidates) are eligible to report practical experience in the PERT. Once candidates are actively reporting in the PERT up to 12 months of Prior experience may be recognized towards the PER.
